AUCTIONEER’S NOTE: This unusual property has a long history in the Joplin area. Cox Spring was settled in this area in 1842 by John Cox, the founder of Joplin. His name is inscribed on a limestone ledge above and to the left of the Spring. It was a regular stop to provide water to both passengers and animals on the Butterfield Stagecoach Lines in the late 1800’s and the ruts from the stagecoach trail are still visible in the yard West of the Spring! It also is said the Spring was used during the Civil War for encampments and water supply. It was a popular gathering place in the early 1900’s for church picnics and family gatherings. The property for the last 30 years has been a private residence and has been used for weddings, picnics and private functions.
